Roger Milla is one of my favourite tracks of all time. The guitar work is out of this world. Also very difficult to play. I’ve been practicing it for a year and, as you can tell from the video, I still mess it up.
The trickiest bit is the descending thirds and fourths in bars 32 to 35. Very tricky to get those rapid slides accurate. But also very effective. As is the use of sixths in bar 23.
The tab is for my condensed version of the tune. It’s each individual section played without the repeats (except the thirds section where I got carried away). I worked it out from the Stadium Mix version which is exactly the same as the original but with most of the vocals removed. Very useful for learning the guitar parts.
The effects I’m using are compression, delay and flange in that order.
I had a request for this song by System Tazvida and Chazezesa Challengers(sometimes listed as Zvawaida Zvakaramba) and it’s only taken me about a year to get it down. The trickiest part is sticking to alternate picking. I found it a big challenge but it does make for a much cleaner sound.
The tab is made up of two parts. Bars 1 – 10 are the intro. Then there’s a short riff for 4 bars. That’s followed in bar 15 by the break that starts at 2:50 in the original.
The original (or at least the version I was working from) is tuned slightly flat. As is the guitar in the video.
Bars 1 and 2
Because of the lack of drums I had a hard time getting the timing down for this bit.
Bars 2 – 4
The song’s main riff. I’ve tabbed the first G as being at the 10th fret. But I sometimes play it at the 15th fret based on my mood and where I find my fingers.
Bars 5 – 15
Shifting up to the 15th fret. I’m doing a little finger shift in the even bars. I play the 14th fret with my index finger, 15th with middle finger. Then shift back up again so the index finger is on the 15th fret.
Bars 15 – 22
A bit of respite here with a more relaxed section.
